Finished my first day at Relay today.
I’ve noticed something about living with CPTSD that I never expected. When something good happens, or we accomplish something we’re proud of, it isn’t always followed by a celebration. Instead, it can be followed by an emotional crash. It’s as though doing something positive comes with the expectation that the emotional bill is about to […] The post Why Success Can Trigger CPTSD first appeared on About That Jack.
It was a great weekend. We were supposed to go to another island, but a lot of rejected RSVP came in and so we decided to change the plan to a quick getaway in our own province. It was the best 11 hours of sleep I had. My friends kept telling me I should spend more time with them, but it was a hectic week opening a hectic month. I mustered all of the energy I have left to socialise. In the end, we all slept at the same time. The gays woke up early to kayak, I kept sleeping. This is probably my…
🌊 Summer vacation started with a 3-day weekend in Japan (Marine Day). We spent the half of the day in Kamakura. Blue Bottle opened a new cafe in area so we decided to pop in for an iced beverage and some reading time. Afterwards while wondering around looking for lunch we went to Muji Cafe for the first time. Looking back, this visit really speaks gentrification of Kamakura, especially on the komachi dori side of things...but also the spaces were big and easy to get seating at.📚 I finished…
Grace? But wouldn’t it be simpler just to call these experiences [of unsought peace and illumination] moments of grace? For that is what they are, aren’t they—times when God suddenly touches our lives with his blessing and renews us from the center of his own bottomless abundance? Well, yes, that is quite true. Grace and mystical hope are close synonyms, and the outward effects are virtually identical. A person under the sway of grace and a person connected to the flow of mystical hope will…
Almost one year to the date and I'm back in the basement. The literal basement beneath a Ramada Inn where Plymouth Playhouse is located, and the theatrical basement that is the setting for the Minnesota-grown musical comedy franchise known as Church Basement Ladies. The first musical in what was to become a series premiered in 2005 at the Plymouth Playhouse, written by Jim Stowell and Jessica Zuelhlke based on the book Growing Up Lutheran by Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson, with music and…
Often imitated, never beaten — for decades now the BBC's closing montage for major sporting events has been a treat. Sunday's World Cup finale was no exception.→ YouTube
I sat in my office, text messages, emails, and phone calls frantically pouring in. I felt like I wanted to scream into a pillow, my head felt like it was in a vise. The phone sat on the desk in front of me, as if waiting for me to acknowledge its demands. A multi-million dollar contract was hanging in the balance and I was at the center of it. Yet, some part of me was almost sitting back and just watching it all play out, wondering about why I was feeling this way, remembering the words that I…
Last week I graphed the frequency of Melbourne bus routes at midday weekdays, aided by data from Adam Bain's Frequency Finder. Matching the common reputation of Melbourne buses, this graph showed that just 7 out of over 350 routes ran every 10 minutes or better while a further 18 ran every 15 minutes. More ran every 20 minutes but the vast majority were still every 30 or 40 minutes. However that data didn't tell us whether weekday peak service is much better than off-peak. Or how weekends fare.…
I'm not a bike guy. I don't know what brand my seat is. I think my gears are Shamano. (That's a brand, right?) I think that's how it's spelled. I'm not going to look it up. I saw it on the window of a bike shop once. I think that's what I have. I just use my bike to get around and to get my kids around. It's just a tool for me. That's pretty normal here in the Netherlands. I've done some hacky repairs on bikes, not because I especially care about bikes but because I especially care about…
When you see a Supported Living place, you may see outdoor furniture placed outside. However, neither the local authority nor the landlord will be upfront about how it’s managed. With St. Thomas House in North Walsham, it was “donated” by the council (as I was told way after moving in). Basically, Norfolk County Council Adult Social Care will nominate people into St. Thomas House without properly checking if compatible with others. There’s two tenants who are there for mental health (read true…
The Snow Day That Told Me Something Was OffIt's snowing hard enough that I'm not braving traffic to get to the gym. Too cold in the garage to tinker with anything. No new book on the nightstand, nothing worth watching on TV. So I do the thing you're not supposed to admit to doing in retirement: I sit there. Coffee, then the window, then the TV, then lunch, then the window again. And honestly? That day was fine. Good, even. Sometimes you need a day like that — your mind needs a break from…
Insert VLC Player joke here.
A few months ago, I and within a few weeks I was taking page after page of notes using . I initially liked it, but I missed taking notes with a pen. Something about scribbling, annotating, and illustrating my thoughts helps me focus and retain better than copy-pasting or typing. When I was doing my…
One year ago today, I took this selfie: This is the story of how I got here. We moved separately, kinda. On Monday, July 14th of last year, the packers showed up at 209 West Drew back in Houston. Erin was super uncomfortable watching them paw through our things, though, and we still needed to get (a) a car being delivered to some friends and (b) our cats to North Carolina, so Erin and our best friend Eric left that morning on a two-day trek to Durham. The packers arrived and did their thing,…
One thing I've always loved is personalizing my online presence. I see it as being similar to decorating, which is another thing I love to do, both in real life and in virtual worlds. I keep my Steam profile decorated, in a sense. I recently revamped it, focusing on similar colors and the games I love. I thought it would be fun to go over some of the details and my thought process behind them. Profile pic: I chose an official image of Alma Armas from VA-11 Hall-A, one of my favorite visual…
Since I want to start posting more regularly I figured it would be a good idea to reintroduce myself. My name is Ben and I live in Scotland. When I’m not working you can find me at the cinema, catching up with friends, reading my books and playing video games. I’ve found my way back to BearBlog to write more confidently and read what others have to say. I have no writing goals other than to write when I feel like it. I happen to be very tired this evening so I’m choosing to keep this short and…
I burrow my hand into the thick fur on the back of your neck you relax and breathe a long sigh of relief we've come a long way since the days you let out a tiny growl when I tried to hug you and the days I cried exhausted from all your shenanigans when I picked you up as a puppy you had bite marks on your tiny head and I thought: "poor baby's been bullied must be the runt of the litter" only to see very soon you were the fiery one all along with the coolest star shape on your chest you were the…
Status: Feeling a bit woozy and on the down-low today. Not incapacitated by any stretch and in a fairly good mood, but definitely not able to reach out of any comfort zones. I did get a fair few tabs closed and written up below, which might seem counter-intuitive, but those feel nicely contained with clear parameters. Anything broader and uncertain, not so much. The two things I thought I might start pondering today are the redesign of the front of the shed where the rabbit run is and the…
Market Street Scooters Market Hall I Bee Network Bus Market Hall II Even I think colour works better on some sunny days, and today was one of them. Market Street was very quiet, and I suppose that now the schools are closed, people are on holiday or they have had enough of the heat.Either way, it was quiet enough to photograph Market Street with very few cars or vans getting in the way.
Chasse, Robert. The Comedy of Print: Being an Investigation into the prevailing use of Words by the Newsprint Industry, wherein their own Words are rearranged Somewhat according to a Magic Formula that summons their Truth. n.p. [New York, NY]: n.p., n.d. [c. 1968–1970]. Mimeographed, stapled wrappers. This first Comedy was, per its title page, “put together by Robert Chasse” — the same Robert Chasse who, with Bruce Elwell and Tony Verlaan, founded the New York-based Council for the Liberation…
every monday morning, my work computer gives me hell for the first 2 hours of my shift. arguably, these are the most crucial hours on a monday morning.
BACK TO THEIR ROOTS: [Rochester Knighthaws Return to Iconic Teal and Purple].(https://rochesterknighthawks.com/knighthawks-return-to-iconic-teal-and-purple/) The original Knighthawks franchise used the color scheme until relocating in 2019; the expansion replacement team used a green, gold, and black scheme since.
Once again, good morning from Nashville Superspeedway! By now, I’m sure most have heard that today’s race has been shortened to last year’s distance – 225 laps. The official explanation is that there will be record heat this afternoon. The forecast is for a high of 90°, which is certainly not a record high for […]
Triad Hydrophilic Wound Dressing, Vashe Wound Solution OTC, and bandages. As much as I try to avoid them, I’m unfortunately familiar with the bumps and scrapes that come with mountain biking; typically minor injuries from brushing a tree of or falling over in the dirt. A few weeks back when riding at River Bends on a far-too-worn-out tire and working on faster, flat cornering, I ended up sliding out, falling over, and scraping the front / outer-side of my left shin / calf on some hard-packed…
I have a cashmere cardigan which is a real favourite. It is soft, cosy and comfortable and I have owned it for a very long time. Needless to say, the moment has arrived when it has developed holes at the elbow, as seen below. A hole in the sleeve of a cashmere cardigan, photo by Amanda Jane Ogden This is how I dealt with the problem: 1. I found a small dish in the cupboard that offered me a suitable shape for a patch. Last year we brought The People of 1925 figuratively back to life in an article that went beyond the politics of the day to focus on ordinary people leading everyday lives. It attracted a wider readership than we expected, so we've decided to follow it up with The People of 1926.The research is taking a little longer than anticipated (just as it did last year), but look out for the article over the next few weeks. As before, we'll be exploring the faces, fashions, and fragments of ordinary…
The teen had taken over the TV. He was watching first-person action-cam footage of dirt bike jumps. “Wow, this really makes me want to play a video game about racing dirt bikes,” I teased him. Then I went silent. I frowned. Later, while throwing Aerobies with the tyke outside, I’d gone silent again. I guess she’d asked me a question, but I didn’t hear her. “Sorry,” I said to her, “I was just thinking.” I was thinking about how I’d never broken a bone before. Too scared to risk life and limb for…
Weekly cleaning and home improvement series. Late start today (it's 11:50). I spent too much editing Star Platinum's face in Tomodachi Life. In fact, it's still half done but I have to get the show on the road now. Lots of tasks to do before the first clean. Weekly cleanToday's focus in the living room. The dining table is piled up again, womp womp. So I'll be tackling that, along with the coffee table as it could use a wipe and a tidy. Home improvementMy (solely mine, not Daniel's, because he…
