I was browsing the local section at a shop near me and stumbled into another one of the Vancouver Seeds volumes; I played volume 3 here awhile back. This one's a little earlier and has a slightly more lo-fi presentation; it was audably recorded at a single live concert rather than in a studio, crowd noise and all. The live show feel does really add something here. This volume is a bit rock-heavy compared to volume 3, but it's also got a great blues recording on side 1. I wasn't able to find the…
Mandalay InstinctGet It At DiscogsMandalay is composed of Saul Freeman, the musical performance half of the esoteric "gallery band" Thieves, and his soaringly vocal counterpart, Nicola Hitchcock. Marginally lumped in with other ripple-free trip-hoppers of the mid-'90s, they enjoy moments of innovation and independence from the trappings of trip with the sprawling and ambitious Instinct. Hitchcock's voice is chilly but not shrill, eerie in the high, womanly tradition of Sandy Denny and even some…
After streaming her performance at Coachella last year a seed was planted. If Lady Gaga ever took that show on the road, we'd try and catch it. ⊕Currently Listening: Lady Gaga “Vanish Into You”Reply via email
I really love the band Hospitality. Something dreamy but also arch and ironic but also deeply heartfelt. It’s got all the contradictions that I love so much in artists I encountered once I hit my 30s and 40s. Here’s a song called Friends of Friends: Actually, it’s so good I’ll link to two versions. One is live, one is an album version. The second has a music video with Alia Shawkat in it. It also has either Gabe or Max from “Gabe and Max’s How to Get the Dreamlife of Your Dreams Using the…
Anderson’s second studio album expands her sonic palette, producing a hypnotic record full of the rich and the strange.
Balancing Act is the sixth album from Danish alt-rock outfit, Vinyl Floor. Built around the nucleus of multi-instrumentalist brothers, Charlie and Daniel Pederson, the duo handle most of the musical duties themselves but expand their sound with some carefully-chosen guest musicians. The emphasis is firmly on catchy melodies and vibrant musical textures, with an array … Continue reading Alt-rock: album review – Vinyl Floor ‘Balancing Act’ →
LJ Holoman (organ), Joe Warner (piano), Michael “Tiny” Lindsey (bass), and Dante Robertson (drums) killed it on April 15th at the Black Cat basement club in San Francisco’s Tenderloin. It was a packed house for a jazz/r&b session on a Wednesday at 7pm, a two-hour set. Holoman, who was sitting in as part of a […]
I talked about her previously in Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark - Gwenifer Raymond, and her tiny desk really showcases her energy
After teasing with tracks, and some terrific remixes, Indonesian 5-piece Strangefruit have finally released their latest EP on Gentle Tuesday Recordings in full. If you’ve been paying attention you’ve likely already been blown away by the singles Iridescent and Monopolar, but there are now 2 more tunes to complete the package. Pouvoir Moteur is the […]

Before I could write a line of code I could play a paradiddle. Right left right right, left right left left, at whatever tempo the metronome was set to, for as long as the metronome was willing to run. I did not know what a paradiddle was for. I did...

My cousin’s band Chalk Teeth just dropped a new single. It’s an entrancing and unique concoction that touches on elements of dark wave, synth punk, shoegaze, early electronic dance music and krautrock, all while leading with vocals in the Polish language. I’m very proud, even though I had nothing to do with it (other than somewhat genetically). Check it out! 🎵
This is another post that I had sort of queued up for while I was on vacation, but it was in a far less complete state than the last one, and only tangentially met the brief. しろつめ備忘録 – which translates to “Shirotsume Bibōroku” or “Shirtosume’s Boboroku” but are just generally called Shirtosume hail from Tokyo […] The post しろつめ備忘録 -『最近なんだか』 appeared first on Space Echo.
Best Record of 2001: Day 20 Good morning! Today we’re taking a look at Elbow’s Asleep in the Back as it faces off against The Glow Pt. 2 from The Microphones. Note: As many of you saw, I recently wrote about a Best Record of 2001 challenge and noted that I’d be writing some of these up. The […]
Neil Young - Jones Beach Marine Theater, Wantagh, New York, June 14, 1989In this week’s James Jackson Toth episode of All One Song, our esteemed guest tells the tale of the concert that made him want to become a songwriter — Neil Young at Jones Beach in June 1989! A legendary gig not only for that Brooooce Springsteen guest appearance at the very end, but also because the second performance of “Rockin’ In The Free World” this evening ended up opening Freedom. Oh what a night in Wantagh. And you…
