Check out As in guillotine... for more. NOTE: I’m attending ALA this weekend with Words & Money, wearing my “occasional journalist” hat, so if you see me around, say hello! Also, my last “newsletter” was linked to and shared by several colleagues, leading to an unexpected influx of new readers. If you’re one of those new readers — whether via email, social, or RSS — welcome! And new or old, thanks for reading. _ONE Borg Complex, technofatalism and think-hostility | Per Axbom Resistance can be…
8608/21527I am sort of glad that this week has turned into a rest week. Had I had the full course when I was meant to I think the heat of the last few days would have been hard to cope with, with full of exhaustion and nausea. It's still not ideal and I am a sweaty mess, having to cope the unpleasant smell of antibiotics emanating from all my pores (probably still better than when I was getting them on a drip and could taste them in the back of my throat). I think they're nearly all out of me…
Yesterday was not what I’d call a good day. It certainly could have been much worse, but at the end of the day I was left completely drained and, as my missus will surely confirm, not exactly in a great mood.So when I woke up this morning I was not what one would describe as full of optimism and ready to head out and seize the day. But, much to my delight, I arrived at work without being presented with any urgent fires that needed to be put out. Everything was in fact running quite smoothly. So…
There is nothing as good for anxiety as feeling supported and cared for! – “Diary #625” It’s hardly incisive criticism or inspired analysis to point out that children see and enjoy different things in a movie or show than adults do, or that young adults and older adults may enjoy different things about the same show. – “The Eye of Childhood” Art cannot exist as handmaiden to politics. This is not to say that art cannot be political; “Guernica” is art. But if the artistic impulse does not…
The Baronet's Bride; Or, A Woman's VengeanceMay Agnes FlemingChicago: Donahue, n.d.250 pagesNot to suggest that he didn't deserve it, but has there ever been a more tortured soul in all of Canadian literature than Sir Jasper Kingswood? The first words of this novel – "And there is danger of death – for mother and child?" – are his. The mother is wife Olivia, who is struggling greatly to give birth. Doctor Godroy is sympathetic, but is "sorry to say...." Sir Jasper calls to a servant: "Ride to…

I am back with Season 2, Part 4 of the Home Network and Devices track in my CybersecKyle Security How-To Series. This time we are putting smart devices in their own lane and making a sane DNS choice without turning the house into a troubleshooting hobby.Smart devices are convenient little chaos machines.I am not anti-smart-home. I like convenience. I like automation. I like not getting up to turn off a lamp when I am already comfortable. But I also do not want a bargain-bin camera, old TV, or…
I wake up and I’m in trouble straight away. Don’t hide your face from me. What can I do to justify my days? They vanish like smoke. I talk to myself, but I might as well be looking at a broken mirror. How long will you hide? You made me in my mother’s womb, in that secret place, and you’re with me now, in my secret life. My guilt is like an open sore. Where does it come from? Out of the depths you call me, out of the depths I call you. You were with me from the beginning. You know my resting…

One unexpected cultural shock. This is my submission for the June 2026 IndieWeb Carnival. The theme is “No way!?”, hosted by Alex Hsu. As far as financial literacy goes in India, it’s almost always emphasized that you should never share important details such as One-Time Passwords (OTPs) or confidential information like your card number, CVV, and so on. And since I’m so responsible with my finances, I’ve followed this whole-heartedly. Just recently, when I had to reschedule my Lufthansa flight…

We’ve arrived at the first Gilsoft released game in our alphabetical adventures with The Adventures of Barsak the Dwarf. Anybody familiar with the adventure writing system The Quill will recognise the style and format here immediately. It’s a standard text adventure with the tried and tested parser mechanics and vocabulary. This game (subtitled The Early Days suggesting there is more to come from Barsak) was written by P and V Napolitano, published by Gilsoft as part of their Gold Collection,…
"Masters of War" by Eddie Vedder Listen on Apple Music Your browser does not support the audio element. Share a song that represents rebellion or freedom to you. - Masters of War by Bob Dylan, performed by Eddie Vedder The lyrics are just as powerful 60 years on as they were in the cold war days when Dylan wrote this. "Let me ask you one question, Is your money that good, Will it buy you forgiveness, Do you think that it could, I think you will find, When your death takes its toll, All the…
I really like this blog by Barry Prendergast. I’m getting quite into the AT protocol stuff and their writing is really helping with my broader understanding of how this stuff works. Barry does a great job of shining a light on not just the technical stuff, but everything else too, which is great because this stuff moves so fast and there are so many good humans doing good work. Check it out
This was never the plan. In fact, if you’d asked me at almost any point in my adult life where I saw myself ending up, I’d have confidently told you it wouldn’t be here. And yet, here I am. Must Get Away Growing up in a medium sized town, near a vibrant big city (Glasgow), is nothing unique, satellite towns exist all over the world and no doubt inspire the same emotions of their teenagers: I must get away from this small place. I can’t remember exactly when that feeling began. Somewhere in my…
The Three Stooges was a minigame collection that was developed by Incredible Technologies and published by Cinemaware starring the titular Stooges, Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard, with the aforementioned minigames being based off of the short films starring the Stooges (e.g. the Punch Drunks boxing minigame). The main plotline involves the Stooges trying to find ways to raise money for an orphanage to prevent the evil banker (modelled off the creator of the Stooges, Ted Healy) from…
Taking a break from the TV and all the fitba, I was out and about this week doing a bit of visiting and looking for ice cream. Fields of grain. Sunny skies. I heard Indigo Buntings on separate country roads. Had me a mango sugar cone, thanks for asking. And no brain melting heat like the reports from elsewhere. Mr Protz took an keen interest in my dirt digging skills the other day, too. Know your strengths. Still, the World Cup is on and we can’t avoid it. As I type Canada is down 2-1 to the…

I don’t mind cooking, but I far prefer having cooked. For the most part, I make straightfoward dinners. I’m well known in my family for my meat-starch-vegetable dinners — a go-to is pork chops, fried potatoes, and whatever steam-in-bag vegetable sounds good that night. I also have a handful of skillet dinners in my rotation, meals that combine all of the ingredients into one pan. My chicken stew seems to be the family’s favorite. I make good food. It’s just always uncomplicated food. As a…
Should you – do you – fully trust your platform to look after your investments? Might they hire a budding Bernie Madoff who siphons off your assets to his own account? Or maybe a Mr Bean, who loses track of them altogether? Surely our world-leading regulatory oversight would prevent anything so catastrophic from happening? And anyway, there’s always the FSCS to bail you out if anything does go wrong, right? Well…maybe. In the second of (what I’ve just decided will be) my investment survival…
The button press kit wasn’t the only recently acquired crafting toolkit in our house, but it was the biggest one—except for the Stuffaloon thing to create your own balloons (yeah, I know…). I just don’t know how my wife finds these things. The problem is that I tend to steal her tools to use for my own journaling purposes. “You always make fun of my crafting stuff but end up using them yourself!” That reproach is only partially correct, but I digress. Here’s a humble but punchy (ha!) punch…
Things like this don’t bother me much; not any more. I’m past the stage where I care. Trolls will always troll, and some people on the Internet will always be as nasty as they can possibly be, safe in the knowledge that their words can extend to insults without repercussion. This person / these people would not dare say that to my face – or anyone else’s for that matter. For face time with that sort of language, there will most certainly be repercussions. Maximum. It all began with this review…

What I made is not important — it’s a list of kayak courses and available spots. I already had created the logic — no AI needed for logical thinking1. So I already had the authentication, the API calls, the custom filtering and the presentation layer. But since I didn’t have any experience with WordPress plugins/widgets, I hosted it on a separate domain and embedded it onto the web site. This has worked for years. However, there were a few drawbacks. Mainly that it was dependent on my private…
At first glance, AniMaps appears to be very slick. It’s a route animator with built-in video export, and it feels made for sharing travel clips on social media. Drop in a global route and it turns it into a smooth, cinematic fly-through using MapLibre GL JS. The camera easing is silky, the line animation feels well-timed, and the whole thing lands right in that sweet spot between data
lately, I've been having a hard time falling asleep. I can't call my bf or my family because they are several hours ahead of me in a different timezone. thus, I lurk on Bear Blog. i need to sleep, but my mind is AWAKE! also, RIP MJ <3
A bit warmer today. Car washing again. M. G. Doc, making 78 to date. Cleared all the lab bins. A lot of fowl to burn from Hanns Hall. Got a new pair of overalls. Collin’s wife left.
