Football may be the last mass spectacle that still resists instant gratification.
Toy Story 5 manages to keep Pixar's animated franchise from slipping into irrelevance, no small feat considering the first Toy Story movie appeared 31 years ago. This edition renews the franchise by expanding the role of cowgirl heroine Jessie (Joan Cusack) and also presenting her with a love interest, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen). It’s not too early to think about wedding gifts. A comforting story arc again underscores the assertion that beloved toys provide kids with much-needed emotional…
So, I think I was vaguely aware that Fritz Lang filmed THE NIBELUNG, but as I was kicking around Amazon, I tripped over this, a four and a half hour long full restoration. Never seen it. This is probably the only way I ever will. A real discovery. UK release – there’s a different version for US+. CONNECTED: HOB’S LANE 21 Cyberpunk Gandalf Metropolis METROPOLIS And The Confusion
Having leaked over the last week in all sorts of locations, we knew this was coming, but the new teaser for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has arrived. It’s more of everything we knew was coming — the drama of being Spider-Man, Hulk smashing things, slight glimpses details of Sadie Sink’s mysterious character (who is all but confirmed to be Jean Grey), organic webs, and yes, more of the humor this version of the franchise has come to be known for. I’d say it looks pretty damn solid. Additionally —…
Ned Leeds has a classic investigation wall behind him in his overview of his Spidey Tracker (part of the promotion for the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day [2026]), as seen on social media. From contributor Justin Wigard.
Heliconia rostrata is better known as the Hanging Lobster Claw Heliconia. I was trying to remember where I’d seen this and remembered it was in front of a neighbor’s house! Posted for Terri’s Flower Hour. See more responses here.

It’s that time of year again. It is time to once again gather to celebrate the work of director Alfred Hitchcock. I can’t believe we’re now on year four already! Time flies. For this Blogathon you can write about any of Hitch’s films and any episode of his TV series. Reviews, articles, lists, and tributes are all welcome. I am not allowing any duplicates unless they are mentioned within a favourites list or an article covering multiple films. You can submit up to two posts each if you wish. The…

I'm back from a wonderful few days traveling up and down Highway 395.I spent last weekend in Lone Pine, where I attended the Concert in the Rocks for this first time. This annual event in the Alabama Hills benefits Lone Pine's Museum of Western Film History. This year's concert featured Dean Torrence, formerly of Jan and Dean, backed by the Surf City AllStars. They sang a lively concert of "beach" music made popular by Jan and Dean, as well as the Beach Boys.Dean is now 86, but I never would…
Watched: Ticket to Paradise 🍿 I didn’t like this one very much. It had all the right pieces: notable actors, beautiful location, a light-hearted plot. The problem is that I really didn’t like the characters.
In Berlin, 1945, the Allies unleashed Maximan to take on the German super soldier Masterman. Maximan’s defeat was only kept secret by the nuclear bomb that destroyed both men.Forty-plus years later, and twenty years after a generation of ’60s British superpowered heroes came and went, the teenage pop star Zenith is the only superhuman left. His only interests – women, drugs, alcohol and fame. So,
Kurasawa’s Seven Samurai holds up 72 years later. Obviously. And the Criterion 4K release is stunning. If there’s ever a film to get folks into filmmaking — the composition, sound and set design, plot, pacing, acting,… this 3+ hour epic truly has it all. It’s probably the most singular experience I had years ago that got me into cinema, next to Dr. Strangelove, Brazil, and Lawrence of Arabia.
For pride month, straight critic Ben Miller takes a look back at a gay film he otherwise would have never seen What is the ideal world we would like to be living in when it comes to understanding and accepting sexuality? How about one of gentle understanding, filled with mutually beneficial grace? Stephen Cone's Princess Cyd might not be outwardly presenting an ideal world of magical realism, but it's one we can at least look to as a beacon of light. For too long, the world of heteronormativity…
The first recording today starts with the end of Arthur. There’s an episode of Newsround. There’s a trail for We Are The Champions. Then it’s Barney’s Barrier Reef – Sense-ational. I wonder how long Barney and Gemma were in Australia to film their links? In this episode we see the Cone Shell. The Crayfish. Clownfish. Goatfish. Boxfish. Cleaner Wrasse. Shrimp and Goby. After a flashback scene with her drugged-out dad uncle, stoned teenage Alpha gets a tattoo at a drug party, then it won’t stop bleeding. She inevitably will catch the medusa virus going around that’s turning people to stone, but first she’s gonna become unstuck in time and live her past/present life with her troubled uncle. I liked the range of weird tones in Titane, the dark humor in Raw – this one is all grim all the way, following lives of pure misery, and whenever something almost positive…
For better or worse, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle engineered the Western mind. Above all, they formed part of a movement that stood at the crossroads of mythological and scientific-rational thought, at the crossroads of mythos and logos. Although the path of logos had already been beaten by the pre-Socratics, and would be paved by the Stoics, it is they, the Gang of Three, that forced the carriage to turn. This book sets out to do three things: trace the journey from mythos to logos; outline…
I don’t believe in the concept of guilty pleasures (just watch and read what you want!). But if I did, the beautifully bonkers 2004 history-nerd film National Treasure would top my list. Read my America Month piece at Cinema Sugar celebrating all the reasons why the Nic Cage-est of Nic Cage movies still endures, if only in my heart.
I reported yesterday on the discovery of two new sermons by St Augustine in a Latin manuscript in a monastery in Poland. One statement in the press release is also of great interest. The discoverer, Prof. Christian Tornau, of the University of Würzburg, stated: “An old catalogue from the monastery mentions a text that bears the same headings and has the same sequence of content as our manuscript. It could have served as a model,” the researcher explains. Tornau cannot confirm this assumption…

I've written several pieces on this blog about football star, actor and Dothan native Johnny Mack Brown. Two of them discussed his 1928 silent films Our Dancing Daughters and A Lady of Chance. The first paired him with Joan Crawford [one of two he made with her] and another Alabama native, Dorothy Sebastian. He starred with Norma Shearer in the second film, much of which is set in Alabama. These attempts to make Brown a romantic lead did not take, and westerns became his forte.

The Miller and the Dagger moths are ostensibly very similar. Triangular, noctuid (owlet) moths with grey wings with black markings. In th my picture the Dagger is the upper moth. It’s very, very difficult to know with out gen det (genital dissection), larval history, or DNA analysis whether its one of two species – Dark (Acronicta tridens) or Grey Dagger (A. psi). The Miller (A. leporina) is very similar although markedly different when looked at closely. Top: The Dagger at the Edge of Night…
Restoration theatre begins with reinvention. After years of closure under the Commonwealth, Charles II reopened the theatres and, in doing so, transformed them. Women appeared on the professional stage for the first time. Audiences returned hungry for spectacle, scandal and sex. The theatre became a place where identities could be created as quickly as they could be discarded. Jessica Swale’s Nell Gwynn understands that world instinctively. Less a conventional biography than a celebration of…
