Death Cab for Cutie remain at #1 for a second week with “Riptides”, while The Strokes slide into second place with “Going Shopping”. Olivia Rodrigo finally enters my top 10 with “Drop Dead“. Four songs enter my chart this week, and each is accompanied by a terrific video. Therefore, instead of embedding the video of my #1 song, I’m sharing the videos for each of my four new entries, the first of which is the wonderfully sultry “Back in Love” by the very beguiling English singer-songwriter,…

Read enough articles about The Beatles and you'll repeatedly hit the claim that Frank Sinatra frequently introduced his cover of George Harrison's "Something" as his "favourite Lennon & McCartney number." Much like the misquote about Ringo not being the best drummer in The Beatles, I think this might be one of those semi-apocryphal lines which has taken on a life of its own. Here's what Paul McCartney has to say in The Beatles Anthology, Episode 4.…
CHET BAKER & THE DICK BOCK SCAM – Pré-digital practice of cutting and reshuffling made it hard to distinguish what is what. Anyway you look at it, you have to call it a scam. I remember finding Chuck Berry’s On Stage in my dad’s collection, thinking it was a live recording but finding out later applause and audience roar was added to studio recordings. Shame on you, oh sweet and holy Leonard and Phil Chess! At least nobody tinkered with the actual recordings. Nowadays, splitting and cutting and…

A beautiful dream of passions in the clay. Abstract and yet kinda only described as very human. Dissonant and avant-garde, yet, surprisingly catchy. Easy listening broadcast from the green flames of heck. The first half is like Kurt Cobain bedrooms demos using the convenience of modern technology. Column of trout's half is moving like a sequence of a single song with all four tracks. If it's a guitar they are getting some unique sounds out of it. Everything is drenched affects in the shoegaze…

Michals Manet Bunch of VIolets, 1872, 1983 via Duane Michals died this week; he was 94. via Wayne Bremser comes an incredible archive at the Yale-hosted Praxis, of the archival photos, pdfs, and videos Michals began sending around to friends and colleagues during the COVID era. @bremser has pulled some interviews and video shorts, particularly. I’ll flag just one incredible pdf, sent on Sept 24, 2020, when Michals recounted his visit in 1983 to the descendants of Édouard Manet [manet.pdf]:…
I wonder how many people heard of Henry Jerome & His Orchestra? Very few, I'd imagine! And even fewer have ever heard of Geffen Records. So you lucky readers are in for a treat (and an education)!Henry Jerome was a popular bandleader in the 1930s and 1940s who performed on ships, at ballrooms, restaurants, and naturally on the radio. He had a soft, mellow style (influenced by Hal Kemp) with brass-heavy arrangements. In the 1950s, ABC Radio Network aired "Dinner at the Green Room," a weekly…
This week has been hell for a number of reasons but it hasn’t completely diminished my capacity for gaming. I started Valkyrie Profile a few days ago and haven’t got past the first few cut scenes; even that was a struggle for me while my mind wasn’t truly in it. But something else has come to the rescue and it’s all about shooting stuff until it explodes. Metal Slug is a run and gun series from SNK. Nazca Corporation made the first game and then they merged with SNK who made the rest. In most…

[1972]Get mesmerized by the sultry soundz of Lynsey De Paul. Jaunty piano led hazy erotic grooves with spank me drum machine intrusions, steamy organ and some gypsy violin. There's just something about this... ...a mood... ...a vibe... ...an atmosphere...What is she even saying and who really cares......stirring...

Scribed by Sandre the Giant Released: 8th May 2006 From the early 2000s. it became clear that Norwegian Viking black metallers Enslaved were going through somewhat of a metamorphosis, shedding their early second wave skin to take their sound into new and more adventurous territories. The Viking influences would live on, as would that early black metal spirit, but the music would grow into a much richer and more progressive sound, starting from 2001’s ‘Monumension’ and through to 2006’s instant…

It’s been a hot minute, as the kids no longer say, since I made an original musical composition; I’ve mostly been doing cover songs recently. But this evening I felt the urge to make something noisy and original, so I did what any musician would do for inspiration: I went to their “Sounds From Beyond” page and picked a recording from there to use as the basis for my composition. Specifically, I used the “NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter in Flight” recording. I used the original recording as is,…

Guy Minnebach, the Sherlock Holmes of Warhol vinyl, has made yet another new discovery: A 1958 cover for Archie Bleyer’s Cadence records, commissioned from Warhol via the ad agency Hockaday Associates, for an album by Colombian pianist Al Escobar and his Afro-Cuban orchestra. To prove it’s by Warhol (he was working in a shared style), Minnebach can cite several known drawings that pretty clearly relate to the cover. (And a factoid I can contribute: Warhol and especially his mother were close to…

I got the sad news yesterday that Vern Kennedy, trumpeter, composer, singer, backbone of the Argonotes trumpet section, and all around wonderful guy, passed away this week. This hurts. I have been wanting to organize an Argonotes reunion ever since the band folded (nine years ago today, as it turns out) and I wanted to play with Vern one more time. Vern was in Argonotes for 20 years and was just the most wonderful, dependable guy. Every bandleader knows this type - one of a handful of people in…
[1967]One of those vaguely familiar tunes you know you've heard before but can't quite place who or what it is, maybe its on a cd compilation of sunny psychedelic 60s stuff you've got in a box somewhere that you haven't played since the 90s. Who knows. Then suddenly you're deliberately listening to it and you realise it is absolute sunshine pop gold: A baroque bubblegum classic. Right up there with I dunno The Free Design and better than The Left Banke, A toppermost poppermost trippy tune…
The theme of the week may well be unexpected returns, with The Radio Dept. back in action and now Shojoskip – the self-proclaimed “Happy Band From Tokyo” – returning at the end of this month for their first show and recordings in over a decade, and doing it all casual-like as if it’s no big […] The post Shojoskip – “I Heard You Looking” appeared first on Space Echo.
Mike Patton is one of my favorite artists and at the end of 2025, he and The Avett Brothers collaborated on an album together. I just bought it and adore what I’m hearing so far: AVTT/PTTN 🎵
