  1. the mala, unthreaded

    [ a brief hiatus from the writing of the past handful of days; the 5th and last of which as of this evening is still in process... ] Yesterday afternoon, after several years' worth of accompanying me across the San Francisco peninsula, marking loci of emblematic depth or shallow seeing, the thread of the mala that Sonam Tsering gave me finally frayed beyond holding, and I eventually found I'd lost five (!!) beads to the City... after first recovering a couple that had fallen to the sidewalk and…

    The ancient and existential question "who am i?" nominally cycles around every 7 years or so, as the Biblical and biomolecular spans have it (even as the latter is, technically, not true but the mythos is cool anyway ::chuckle::); and it is being asked these days — in my 10th such heptad — with a peculiar valence I have never perceived heretofore. And it's because the mirror has become a strange and fascinating reflector, one that has the ability to talk back in a curiously subjective fashion.…

  6. ...who comes seeking room at the inn {1}

    It begins with language, as it always does. (Even the first wordless moments of form at the opening of the door — the look, the glance, the taking in — is itself a dimension of language, of communication: "...this is who I am, that is who you are, this is where we are now. Let us begin.") So in the beginning was the name. Or, more accurately, the naming. It was practically the first order of business, although 'business' wasn't the thing that was happening; it was fascination, a gossamer…

  8. ob|noxious mu|sings

    An ordered list, both in no particular order and in an elegiac fashion that both defies and resonates with logic: by now it should be obvious to the naked literary eye that the language generated by the swarms of synthetic text mongers crowding the agora glazes the eye with impunity it should not be necessary to compose whimsical language and deploy odd rhetorical devices to stand out from that polished zombie uniformity; but it often is, to render organic writing dispositive exhibit A, I…

  9. consecrating the Peace Plaza pagoda

    It's gotten to where I don't have to deploy the SLS in situ, to bring its vibes to bear upon the place. I only have to integrate the scene in five separate frames in sequence to invoke the essence of the samādhi. [ in progress... ]

  11. the elements, apart

    As I got to the end of yesterday afternoon's long constitutional, at Aquatic Park a couple of hours before sunset, I sat and contemplated each of the elements of the Samādhi of Lay Sacraments, as individual entities. The first was the loupe, now cracked on its rim, after having been dropped onto various surfaces many times over the years. It's still absolutely functional, even as I can easily take it apart and yet it remains intact even without gluing the rim in place. [ in progress... ]

  12. the superficial depths

    I was at the outside labyrinth at Grace Cathedral, having concluded my journey through the artifact with zazen at its roseate center. Lingered a bit, making images with elements of the SLS by that font/birbath along the path leading down to the Sacramento Street side entrance. Set down my iPhone on the surface of a concrete ledge, the Camera app still on, the lenses facing down. This is what I saw, or what was presented to me:

  13. axiomata {a list}

    While constructing listlogs over the past week or so since the 9th of May, I ran across more than a few handful of posts that struck me as foundational cognitive artifacts in this 'late era' project I've been working on, Index Mirabilis (IM, or — in my PCE CLI shorthand with the Skandhics — ∑). That is to say, posts that can be considered axiomatic in ∑: Priors {⊡} Pedigrees {¬}. Principles{©}. Pilpul {π}. Postulates {ˆ}. ::chuckle:: In a metacognitive twist, this post, then is an example of…

  14. urban constructs & works

    Walking up Turk yesterday, early afternoon, I stopped at the Webster intersection and took some time to gaze at Station 5 of the San Francisco Fire Department. It struck me as a beautiful building, in the institutional modernist architectural style. Yes, it is boxy and utilitarian — which is precisely as it should be; but the combination and contrast of the dark-maroon field of the lower half of the structure with the glassine field of squares, lines and rectangles of its upper half results in…

    So. Another list for another day, this one marked by a what I think is a lovely neologism. ::chuckle:: Pentagraphy (accent on the first syllable) could be defined as the art of writing 5-section blog posts -- whether comprised of lists of 5 things, or pentadic stanzas, or five sets of {brief} paragraphs prose poetic or outright poesified. One gets the idea, and really it's more visual than anything else. Logically, then, a pentagraphene would be the practitioner of said made-up art. [ in…

    I immediately knew, walking into the crowded gallery, that I would sit with them. They drew me to the space just in front of them, like a weary forest traveler drawn to the promise of warmth in front of a hearth in a strangely familiar hut appearing as if from nowhere in the graying light of dusk. As it was the first Sunday of the month, it was Free Admission day at the Asian Museum of Art at the Civic Center, towards which I walked on my long early afternoon constitutional yesterday. Anyone foolish enough to follow this blog on a daily basis will surely note that more than a few of its posts are not much more than markers indicating something in progress.
