I’m a long-time fan of Hookmark, but not a fan of its price tag or anti-customer device limits. Now I’m a fan of my own project, Snaggle, which implements the parts of Hookmark I actually use, borrows Alfred as a user interface, and is AGPL’d so anyone can use it for free as much as they want.

I bought Hoka Clifton shoes a while back because they have a reputation at being good for walking. I disagree. They’re fantastic for standing. They’re delightful for strolling. Plan on rolling your ankle along the way and for having achy shins. I would truly rather wear hardsoled boots for making a long or fast trip.

I’m on a bus reading “Accelerando” on a cheap Chinese ereader hacked with open source firmware. Siri in my ears periodically interrupts with a spoken summary of a Slack message from the company lawyer and I shake my head to dismiss it; I’ll be at the office soon anyway. The two guys in Patagonia vests next to me are one-upping each other with AI opinions that aren’t quite based in reality. Just a regular commute in the Bay Area.

I was trying to remove a Li-ion battery from a thing, and accidentally got its attention. Now the enspicified pillow is sitting inside a pyrex casserole dish on my concrete driveway, far away from anything else excitable. Today, I learned.

This weekend I’m putting together a little cyberdeck from a Raspberry Pi, a 4.3 inch screen, and a tiny keyboard and trackpad. I’m going to start off playing with someone else’s design until I have a better idea of what I’d do differently on my own.

I had an HSA years ago. They sent me an email today regarding my tax forms (for the year I’ve already filed my taxes for). The mail included their company logo as an attachment, but mis-named so that it’s not viewable. And when I went to the link in the email, I got a TLS error because their certificate had expired. I’ve rarely been less confident about a legitimate email. Get your act together, WealthCare. Fintech companies don’t usually want to present themselves as amateurs.

I haven’t finished the morning commute yet and already have five p0 things to do before lunch. So it’s gonna be that kind of day, huh.

Ahh, the biennial California trip to the smog check station. It’s an inconvenience I suffer gladly, though. I have asthma. I like being able to breathe. If keeping junkers off the road means having to prove that our own vehicle is playing by the rules, then so be it.

I love playing soccer. I’m good at it, not professional or even college level, but still pretty good. I also enjoy watching live soccer and observing, rapt, until a crescendo when the crowd goes wild. And yet, there are few things I’d less rather endure than watching soccer on TV or streaming recordings of it. Replace “soccer” with “classical music”, and every word of that is still true. I always feel guilty about that, but you’ll never catch me listening to Bach. I’d much rather be playing.

Installing GAM to administer Google Workspace from the command line is an exercise in trust. Install with with curl | bash. Add an app with some opaque ID to your workspace with full access to everything. Go to GCP and give the app access to everything there, too. Do it again with another opaque app ID. Ta-da! Utah’s stupid new law “prohibits covered websites from sharing instructions on how to use a VPN to bypass age checks.” It’s probably illegal for minors to access this site from Utah because I say some things that Utah’s leaders probably find offensive. Let me know if I don’t; I’ll work on fixing it. To access it over a VPN, follow these instructions to turn on iCloud Private Relay. Then I can’t see where you’re connecting from. There. Now I’ve broken the law in Utah.

I’ve been running Ollama on my Mac Studio for local AI experiments. I followed advice to try oMLX instead and it’s ludicrously faster, like maybe 5-10x for both time to first token and completing the response. I haven’t benchmarked it, but it subjectively feels like when I replaced a hard drive with an SSD.

Siri is so bad as a voice assistant that it made me stop caring about device-local AI, which is impressive. Yesterday, “hey Siri, turn off the bedroom lights” worked. Today, that responded with “sorry, I can only set one scene at a time”. The proper phrasing — for now — is “hey Siri, turn the bedroom lights off.” Walking to work, “hey Siri, podcasts play”, which is/was the documented way to play a podcast, started streaming random music. “Hey Siri, play a 🤬🤬🤬 podcast” did the trick.

AI is fantastic at configuring Emacs. Me: Why does Emacs format this TS differently than Prettier does? Droid: There’s the problem. Apheleia’s prettier-typescript formatter includes (apheleia-formatters-js-indent “–use-tabs” “–tab-width”), which injects –tab-width and –use-tabs flags based on your Emacs buffer settings.
