xteSTINK: A command-line utility for doing things to the Xteink X4 (Jason Scheirer on the Internet on Jason …)
Top Matter: Codeberg for the library, doc for the library. I bought an Xteink X4! It’s small! It’s cheap! It’s hackable! I have an e-book collection, if you could call it that, but I always purchased PDFs. This thing reads epubs by default, which I don’t have. I want to use this to read my books! So I’ve been hacking on a little go command line utility to get stuff on to the One huge unlock for me was the native XTC/XTCH format the reader can render which gives you the ability to render…

In late March, I wrote that I'd acquired a tiny, nearly credit-card-sized e-reader and had been regularly using it. I still am! Several months later, it remains in the main bag I use when I leave the house, and I use it most days of the week. I've since used it to read numerous old mystery novels (as research for a project) completely comfortably. I recently kicked off reading a bunch of communist theory... also as research for a project. Much of my "job" right now is reading, so it's good to…

I’ve been thinking about coding my own KOReader Sync Server. At the moment I’m using a lightweight implementation by b1n4ryj4n, which has served me well for years. But recently I’ve been looking for a way to improve the interaction between my Xteink X4 and my ancient Kindle running KOReader. With the server I’m using, I’m stuck with the binary comparison of books, where a hash of the actual ebook is uploaded, instead of just comparing the book’s name. This prevents me from applying epub…

The moment I saw someone post a picture of this little technological marvel slotted into a pocket Travellers Notebook (TN) on Reddit, I knew I wanted one. And a month or so ago I caved and bought one, because a. I want to stop doomscrolling, and stop getting distracted by apps or using my phone as a distraction from my thoughts b. I wanted to have something to read with me at all times. I did have apps on my phone to read but… see a. c. It’s so freaking cute. I included a cover (I knew I didn’t…

I've just got an awesome Xteink X4 ESP32 E Ink reader and flashed the awesome CrossPoint Reader over awesome WebSerial, which took like 30 seconds in browser. Then I thought, wouldn't it be even more awesome if I could read my notes from the awesome Simplenote? That way I could send text snippets to Xteink from literally anywhere - fast and with zero friction. Also it will make Xteink useful as a standalone, distraction-free device. I was considering creating a PR to the CrossPoint Repo, when I…

As I wrote before, recently I got myself a XTEINK X4, even the blogpost is not that old I got it a little more than a week ago. After using it active several days I can really say the size is the big win and the best argument for this eBook reader. I really keep the habbit to have it in my pocket beside my wallet. It is so tiny it doesn’t hurt and I found myself using it more and more if I need to wait somewhere. Technical Improvements In my first article I wrote I went with the Papyrix…

I mean isn’t it a totaly adult and viable decision to directly buy a tech thing after you read a bunch of blogs writing about it? Yeah, absolutely :) And as some of the Podcasts I listen also mentioned this one I was sold. As you can see on Bubbles how this is really in everyones “mouth” in the last days. What the… ? Well the XTEINK X4 isn’t just a regular boring ebook reader. It’s also not going to replace my 8" ebook reader, but it is tiny, it fits in my palm allowing me to really just have…

The XTEInk X4 is a small open eReader that has a 4.3" screen and costs $69. It is based on the ESP32-C3 micro controller, which is becoming popular amongst makers because it is more affordable than Single Board Computers like the Raspberry Pi. I had seen ads for it on my socials but after Rui Carmo posted about it and and learning there is an active community using and supporting it, I decided to buy one. Upon recommendation from the community I flashed the CrossPoint Reader software on the…

I recently succumbed and bought an Xteink X4 from Aliexpress. My primary ereader is my Kobo Clara HD but it has become quite aged. I bought it in 2018. I love it but it has its problems. The battery can’t hold a charge longer than a week. The back is starting to fall off. It uses microUSB for charging, too. Icky. Due to these reasons, I thought I’d give this cute little Xteink X4 a try. It’s only $69USD, small and cute. After using this for about 1 week, do I think that this will replace my K...

Continuing to really dig my Xteink X4 ereader, a tiny eink device that easily fits in a shirt pocket, where mine has now semi-permanently taken refuge. I outfitted the gadget’s sleep screen with the central image from the American edition of William Gibson’s 2020 novel, Agency. Doing so was simple: You just make a 480 […]

This little simplistic device has been making the rounds on the smallweb lately, and I have fallen prey to the hype. That said, I have no regrets and have been enjoying my time with it, so here are my thoughts on the gadget. The X4 by Chinese company XTEInk is a 4-inch tall e-reader that … Continue reading "XTEInk X4 Minimaist e-Reader Review + DIY Case"

Here are a few things I've been happy with this week: Obsidian (gasp!), Neofinder, Capture One, Xteink X4.Whenever I'm feeling like living in Easy Mode, I go all in and then regret it in a day or two. I'm more than a week into my version of it (Obsidian, Ghost, BBEdit) and there's no sign of it going away. Could this be it?I've been helping friends on a SaaS product and it's been great to be involved with something real, for a change. Something not just in my head. Also, scary.

Got one of those little Xteink X4 epub ereaders. Fits in a shirt pocket. Flashed it, upon arrival, with the alternative firmware called CrossPoint Reader, which has a tidier interface and some useful features. (MIT Data Science book, by John D. Kelleher and Brendan Tierney, from Humble Bundle.) The X4 has no light or touchscreen […]

A tiny ereader device that I purchased and love, some thoughts and impressions on it after a couple weeks with it!

You might’ve already heard a lot about it by now since it’s gotten quite popular the past few months, but I have some things to say about the XTEINK X4 and how it’s become one of my favorite gadgets. If this is the first time you’re hearing about it, the X4 is an affordable mini e-ink reader roughly the size of a 2010-era smartphone. It sort of feels pseudo-retro in that way.

This review is not about paper or ink or pens but about a device I think might appeal to anyone looking to get away from doomscrolling. It’s the XTEink X4 ($69 available in black or white — direct link or Amazon). It’s a a 4.3″ eink screen device that is not tethered to any ecosystem.…

I recently discovered the Xteink X4 , a tiny e-reader that completely caught me off guard. Its capabilities far exceeded my expectations, and within the first hour of using it, most of my initial concerns disappeared. That said, I’m a tinkerer at heart, so I couldn’t resist diving into everything the community has built for this little device. Though some may question this usage, the question that often comes up is whether it’s even practical to read manga/comic on such a small screen with…
