Its been a while since I last wrote a post. I don’t really know what to write about but I have this feeling of wanting to let thoughts out of my head. I’m not sure if it’s tiredness or overstimulation that made my brain feel mush but all I could do the last couple of days is half-listen to my audiobooks while I go through my daily routine. Eat, workout, shower, go to work, go home, sleep, repeat. I don’t mind the routine, it makes my days go by pretty fast and it forces me to stay present…

Whenever a social media whatever lets me set a header image I pretty much always use a photo of moss that I took from when my partner and I visited Iceland about a decade ago. We just went back and we had a blast. Birding took us way off the beaten path, as did my years long obsession with Bárðar saga Snæfellsáss.

Shipwrecked Paradise Island Tiki Bar is the Sacramento location and sister property of the original Shipwrecked in nearby Davis. Located in Midtown near Capitol Park, the bar is basically an adult version of Rainforest Cafe thanks to elaborate set pieces, animatronic snakes, and a jungle theme. They call themselves a tiki bar and while there aren’t tiki idols there are plenty of skulls and stone idols that fall enough into a “big tent” categorization of such things. We arrived before 5:00 for…

The weather today was absolutely perfect. After a morning of running errands and a stop at the park, I found myself just chillin’ at my campsite. Soon, a white mist slowly wafted from behind the van. It seemed to come out of nowhere. I’d just watched an episode of The Why Files (on YouTube) about parallel universes and people who may have shifted into one and came back. Was this a portal to another universe opening up? I blinked several times trying to focus on the white mist… wondering if my…

This has been burning a whole in my bookmark collection to write about. Last month, Ian Walker wrote about Aftermath and their decision to seemingly sidestep their commitment to the BDS movement targetting Microsoft and Xbox by publishing an article about Forza Horizon 6. Following that, co-founder Luke Plunkett wrote about that post on Bluesky. From there, Ian gave his personal perspectives on why regardless of the intent, the article served to remind potential customers of the game’s…

Movies and TV shows and cartoons, I watched them all from a very young age. When I was a child, the real-life situations were not so good, but these stuff let me live in my imagination away from all the problems I had. These stuff made me feel different kinds of emotions and explore my own fantasy while popping, of course. So although it is very cringe to admit and feels like a psycho, I became addicted to these a lot. The only thing after this was a lot of sugar in lemonade. But this…

It's a long way from the Southern Rockies, but this video fits the June 20 theme of "predators and fawns/calves." A friend in Poland sent the video's link to the news site Notes from Poland. The European bison, sometimes called "wisent" (similar to ours but taller and slimmer) was extirpated by over-hunting. Its population has recovered in a few places due to re-introduction from captive herds. The largest population is in Poland's Białowieża Forest, one of the last examples of Eastern European…

There’s a steep hill at the end of the block that goes through a park with a nice view of the city. It’s the equivalent of about six blocks long. At one time, I would be huffing and puffing by the time I got to the top. If my wife was with me, I would jokingly tell her to leave me for dead. But after a few months of taking on this hill multiple times a week, I was able to make it to the top with little change in my breath. I’m no spring chicken, so this was quite the accomplishment. I tell this…

Next tickets available 18th July for The Gentle Author’s Tour of Spitalfields A beano from Stepney in the twenties (courtesy Irene Sheath) We have reached that time of year when a certain clamminess prevails in the city and East Enders turn restless, yearning for a trip to the sea or at the very least an excursion to glimpse some green fields. In the last century, pubs, workplaces and clubs organised annual summer beanos, which gave everyone the opportunity to pile into a coach and enjoy a day…

Tonight's Movie: The Man Who Reclaimed His Head (1934) - A Kino Lorber Blu-ray Review (Laura's Miscellaneous Musings)
THE MAN WHO RECLAIMED HIS HEAD (1934) is an odd yet interesting drama out on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. This film was released a few weeks ago, at the high of the classic film festival season in Southern California, but I was glad to now catch up with it.The movie begins strangely as somewhat hysterical Paul Verin (Claude Rains) staggers through the streets of Paris carrying his little girl Linette (Juanita Quigley, billed as Baby Jane) and a valise. It's World War I and Germans…

This weekend Townsquare made it to the Hacker News front page. I had posted it on Friday, but it didn’t make much noise at first. Then I went to Rock in Rio Lisbon and mostly forgot about it for a while. On the way back home, around 3am, I saw an email from Hacker News moderation. They had liked the idea and moved the post into the second-chance pool, which meant it would get another shot on the front page. That’s when things got wild. I was checking everything on the way home: visitor numbers,…

Yesterday was the hottest Broken Arrow Skyrace 23k of the four I have run. And the hardest. Sometimes you give it your all and your all is not quite enough. Made it much farther than last year, under worse (hotter, dryer, dustier) conditions. It was already in the mid-70s Fahrenheit at the race start, spiked into the 80s and 85+ from mile 4 onward, hitting highs in the low 90s. I had somewhat prepared for the heat, with a hydration plan & practice, and a cooling outfit including an ice-bandana.…

Here’s Dr. Johnson on the dangers of quoting others in a commonplace book: “the pleasure of wantoning in common topicks is so tempting to a writer, that he cannot easily resign it; a train of sentiments generally received enables him to shine without labour, and to conquer without a contest.” – Samuel Johnson, The Rambler, No. 2, ‘The necessity and danger of looking into futurity’. 24 March, 1750. Link There’s some irony in quoting him, but it’s in the service of pointing out that Johnson’s…

Bonus rant: every time I accidentally launch Chrome and try to quit it and it blocks me with its stupid non-standard highjacking of what cmd-Q means, I’m tempted to defenestrate my laptop until I remember that I can fix that broken setting in its preferences. I remember when I use to like Chrome and appreciated its design. Believe it or not, it was a pretty nice browser nearly 20 years ago.

⚠️ // hey so this post is just a pointless vent, literal "screaming into the void" ah blogpost The modern internet makes me feel like I'd died and gone back to the 2010s, where Bootstrap just came out and we all built the same-looking website -- no matter where I go, I see the same visual elements, completely unchanged. And -- as is the case with most of the ways our life has been made worse in the past few years -- the reason is AI. Point being, I could swear most vibecoded websites all look…

I've been a happy ready-player user for some time now. I consider the Emacs package fairly feature-complete, for my needs anyway. Well almost. While I've successfully migrated most of my music-listening to offline playback, there are the odd times when I enjoy streaming YouTube audio. I've pondered extending ready-player for this use case, but its current approach is fairly file-driven. For starters, it uses dired as a core abstraction. Before venturing on a major refactoring, without even…

Stove-mas continues! The interior work is done. Tomorrow they’ll finish the chimney outside. There’s a practical reason for the 45 in the stovepipe but I love the character it gives it.

I feel like I say some variation on this every time I see something released by Sony Pictures Classics these days, but it's odd that I'm heading out to Arlington to see this one, rather than it playing in Kendall Square or at the Coolidge. SPC used to be the Kendall's bread and butter, putting out a bunch of foreign and indie material that maybe wasn't as high-profile as what Focus, Searchlight,

About 3 weeks ago, Leo Laporte and I recorded the first episode of what will be a new monthly show on the TWiT network. Naming things is hard, and we almost voted on the name, like we did for Stack Overflow, but we quickly landed on Off By One with Jeff Atwood. Which is funny for so many reasons, but mainly because of this programmer joke:No, I did not come up with this variation on the classic quote, but I wish I had. Well, whatever, here's show number two – free to view for everyone. The show…
