When I saw this book advertised I was intrigued by the premise, due to its setting, its choice of victim; a writer, and the fact this victim had a history for faking events in his life. Witting dedicated this novel to Sir Derrick and Lady Verner. I think this would have been Sir Edward Derrick Wingfield Verner, 6th Baronet and his wife, Lady Angèle Verner, although I could be wrong! I’m not sure how Witting knew these two.

Sometimes the vulgar auteurists are wrong. This brit-accented antiquity drama mixed with fast-cut bloodless gladiator action (edited to hell, the same way I recall RE6) from the writers of Batman Forever was a nice-enough waste of time between Resident Evil episodes. I wanted a Coen movie, I got a Coen movie. Absolutely hilarious. And another fantastic cast. They were all a delight to watch, but I probably liked John Malkovich's performance the most. Also loved the idea with the CIA guy reporting those summaries of what had happened.
