So a nine hundred gram bag of Argyll Blend, which is my go-to coffee when I’m not getting fancy with single origin stuff, is about sixty bucks (plus tax, but we’ll ignore that for this exercise). I use a twenty gram dose with my 9barista Mk 1., which comes out to forty-five cups of coffee at about a buck forty a cup, rounding up.1 At the shop an equivalent Americano would run about four bucks and change plus tip, so we’ll round up to five.2 So using my machine at home saves me about three fifty a cup.3 The 9barista, when I bought it, ran me about eight hundred bucks all in counting tax, shipping, and so forth, plus another two hundred bucks for a Baratza Encore coffee grinder. A thousand bucks divided by the savings per cup and it works out that I’d need to drink about three hundred cups of coffee at home to break even.4 I drink at least a cup a day and typically more like two. So this coffee setup paid itself back in less than a year. Guys. If you love coffee, invest in your home…
