Prepare, Don’t Rehearse

When you are preparing data, a presentation for your boss, or an important conversation, it is natural to plan every detail. You want to think through the eventualities, anticipate questions, and be prepared for what might come. But there is a point where preparation stops helping and starts getting in the way. Too much planning can take away the spontaneity that makes a conversation natural. You start planning the exact words, the exact sentences, and even the order in which everything should be said. What was meant to give you confidence becomes a structure you have to remember. Then, when the moment arrives, the pressure to reproduce that structure works against you. You worry about missing a point or saying something in the wrong order. You become so focused on following the plan that you lose your flow.
