a tour of creating a family reading culture In the Netherlands, many families are in possession of magnificent ceiling-tall bookshelves — a practice I always envied. A shelf seems like an integral part of any well-doted intellectual family. The rows of books collected through the lifetime of each household individual tell a story of their own. As much as I admire such arrangements, specially considering the small size of Dutch housing in the city, I am unable to possess one of my own — not for lack of wanting — due to the limited space and our own self-inflicted rules of not becoming another family “hoarding memories” instead of living them, I have since come up with creative solutions. While ‘home literacy environments’ are well documented on it’s impact and outcomes in children’s literacy, I found no studies related to the way books are presented in the family.
