handgun: discussed; handgun: lost

We drove to Orange County yesterday. Kelly went to work, and I stole away to the beach at Huntington. I enjoy the scene at Huntington Beach, and I’ve been treated well by the folks in the water each time. Yesterday as I was walking out, in my wetsuit and carrying my swim fins and handplanes, a fellow called out at me– “A HANDGUN!” I said–“yes indeed, but I know when someone calls them that they have a bit more gray hair than other folks!” And he asked: “what do they call them now?” “Handplanes.” He repeated the word. Then he said: “In high school in the 1970s a kid in my wood-shop class made one, then we all made one–they’re fun man!” I replied with a California-appropriate “that’s so rad man!” I mentioned that Kalani Lattanzi rode a Taylor’s Mistake Handski to bodysurf Nazaré. “Now that wave is crazy man! 100 foot!” As we got closer to the water, he introduced himself with a first name.
