Yesterday I went to the beach. Water is always in motion. I have many opinions and intuitions about the motion of water. I go to the beach when I am likely to be able to ride waves. I make myself aware of time and tide, wind and the size and shape of water. James mentioned to me yesterday that he had seen the painting Surf, from 1937, and shared it with me. He mentioned that I might appreciate it. I do. What stood out to me is how it captures water in motion. The blast of surf crashing and settling on a seaside rock shelf is terrific. It’s a moment frozen in time. It reminded me of impressionism. It’s not specifically impressionistic to my eye, but uses the techniques of impressionists to convey motion. When thinking about how to turn an action into mark-making I usually think of comics first. Comics has motion motion lines to represent motion.
