There is a Japanese word that almost everyone reading this has already heard — “itadakimasu” (いただきます) — said in a film, or a cooking video, or by a friend pressing their palms together over a bowl before the first bite. It is one of the most widely exported small phrases the language has, and it is almost always glossed the same way: “thank you for the food.” *** Belong to the cool Kids!
