Ever since I got my first mechanical keyboard, I’ve been able to turn caps lock, one of the most useless functions on a keyboard, into something actually useful. The keyboard came with a switch on the back that allowed it to act as another control key. It was great! Made for an easier ctrl+s shortcut since my left pinky already sat next to the caps lock key. Been using it for 12 years now. It’s basically second nature. Unfortunately, when I got newer version of this keyboard, they swapped the dedicated switch for that function for a set of fully programmable layers. On one hand, handy! I was able to map the screenshot macro to a single key. And I could still remap caps lock into something else. Just took a few more steps. Annoying, but at least I could still get the result. The problem: I had to reset my keyboard recently and I cannot remember how to properly program it. I broadly know the steps involved – enable the program function and select the key to program followed by the key…

one the first steps of a fresh OS for me, is to map CAPSLOCK key to ESCAPE.
@bubbles yup. Caps lock to escape is required.
@bubbles Huh. Hadn’t thought of overriding it to escape. I know switching it to be control is common amongst emacs users.
As a neovim user, I definitely see the appeal. But I have a fancy Ergodox EZ that puts the escape key right next to my index finger.
On MacOS you can map Caps-lock key to the Control key in the Keyboard Settings
@bubbles
This is the way.
@bubbles I have it set to alternate between English and Greek (which I don't speak but whose alphabet contains a lot of math symbols)
I fell in love with caps lock after reading this:

This adds a new layer with the click of caps-lock
I now have a num lock in the middle of the keyboard. 🎈
@bubbles It appears that you've pasted the wrong link!
I have mapped it so it creates a extra layer in my keyboard. It enables IJKL as the arrow keys, O for delete, a much more things like SDF as the Control, Command and Alt keys. It speed me up a lot.
I personally map Caps Lock to the Compose key, accented letters pose no issues for me anymore!
I made my caps lock the "compose" key, which is super useful for typing french or fancy characters like é, à, ç, → or ⅓
I have caps lock and backspace switched. Great for me, frustrating to others haha
