I’ve been a fan of Kane Parsons’ Backroom series and other works since they first popped up on YouTube. I talked about this upcoming movie and the whole aesthetic of the “Backrooms” and liminal spaces when I reviewed the Pools game a few months back. It’s very much my vibe and I gel with it a lot. It’s my kind of slow creepiness. Needless to say, I was pretty excited to see how they would adapt this into a full-sized feature film. A feature film backed by no less than A24. A feature film where they didn’t take the idea and put another creative in charge and twist the idea out of all recognition. Instead, they just gave Kane, at 20 years old, the ability to just run with his vision and actually direct the film himself. Wow. It’s certainly worked out for them as well. The YouTube series is primarily focused on the lore, standalone short stories, and the general horror/creepy aesthetics.
