Influential industrialist Vanger’s niece Harriet disappeared under mysterious circumstances 40 years ago. As a last attempt at solving the case, he hires investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist. I did watch the 2011 US-version of the movie back when it appeared because it had Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. If I had known that the original Swedish version has Noomi Rapace in it, I would have watched this 15 years ago. This has a nice story, great pacing and the performances of Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist really make this psychological thriller a great watch. There are however sine rape scenes which are pretty graphical and stomach-turning, part of the dark realism that exists in Swedish cinema. Apart that, it’s inquisitive, a whodunnit done properly that keeps you glued to the screen until the end.
