For the moment I will finish the Need for Speed series with this release, as it’s the last NFS game I played extensively. This was actually the only Need For Speed title I ever finished. I remember it fondly, but however, it’s definitely through many pairs of rose-tinted glasses. Coming after the slam-dunk Underground pair of games, this feels a bit less spectacular. I did play it between two university years, so I had a lot of time to spend with it, and I enjoyed it back then a lot. Heck, I enjoy it even now, albeit I’m seeing it a bit more different twenty years later. Although in a racing game the story shouldn’t matter that much, here it does, and it’s written excellently. It’s probably one of the best stories in a racing game, not only the NFS franchise. Getting crossed by Razor at the start and then having to ride and plough through the Blacklist gives a nice sense of progression and is very rewarding once you start to take them down one by one.
