Spencer Beach Park is often quiet during the week. This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Beaches.’ See more responses here. I wondered if I had any beach photos, and it turns out I do have a few! Captions on the photos. One of the beaches at Keawaiki. The black sand beach at Pololu. The Appalachian Trail crosses directly over the peak,…

I like a nice cloud. This is at the abandoned but well-grazed WW2 airfield at Davidstow, Cornwall, where the sky is massive. Often you can't see anything because the sky comes right down to the ground as mist, but not today.
Some Dragonflies we found on a walk around the reservoir. Emerald Damselfly / Common Spreadwing Common Darter Dragonfly Common Darter Dragonfly Male Ruddy Darter Not a Dragonfly. But was watching me watch the Dragonflies.
Overcast and cool. A sudden thumping under the floor, and a small groundhog goes running out into the garden, followed by the head of a larger groundhog, who turns to look at me over the end of the porch. After a minute-long staring contest, she drops out of sight.
These droplets are some of the jewels of jewelweed. Schenley, 26 August 2026 (photo by Kate St. John) 30 August 2026 Yellow jewelweed (Impatiens pallida) and spotted touch-me-not or orange jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) are at their peak in Schenley Park. Last week I examined them from many angles and documented how prolific they are. Above, water droplets hang from the tip of each scallop on the leaf. These are some of the jewels of jewelweed, as Katherine Wagner-Reiss explains at the Morris…
Duncan Rawlinson photographed this scene in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada. Thick fog drifts across the water, softening the silhouettes of tree-lined islands and reducing the view to bands of gray and white. The mist compresses distance, layering the islands into faint, overlapping shapes. A small structure on the right anchors the composition. The calm water reflects the diffused light, creating a monochromatic study of atmosphere and landform. The panoramic frame emphasizes the…
After leaving Malcolm Island, we headed to Holberg to stay in the adventure huts at the Scarlet Ibis Pub. Like the umbrella says, The Scarlet Ibis is the Island’s most remote pub. A bumpy and very dusty ride on a logging road dodging logging trucks will get you there…maybe, LOL. The pub provides a nice break from the drive and a place to stay and/or refresh before heading onto the main attraction: Cape Scott Provincial Park and San Josef Bay. After arriving at the parking lot, it is an easy…
A Nice Walk: Biarritz (1½ miles) Sometimes you just want to go for a nice walk, nothing too taxing, plenty of variety, seaside chic, trois plages, lifeguard-assisted, Belle Époque architecture, multiple refreshment opportunities, rocky promontories, Atlantic rollers, walking in the steps of Napoleon, occasional lizards, stripy parasols, warmer than home, a bit of a stroll, won't take long. So here's une belle promenade along the coast of southwest France from Biarritz's old lighthouse to the…

21:04 - My first time seeing the moon rise from behind a mountain.
Threadfin Butterflyfishes are almost always seen in pairs. They are quite common, but not numerous around here.
I recently visited Trustees of Reservations property Lowell Holly in Mashpee and Sandwich, MA, on Cape Cod. It’s a pleasant hike with lots to enjoy. Lowell Holly abuts Wakeby Pond and Mashpee Pond. There are beaches on both ponds along the trails that you can take advantage of, weather-permitting. Also, the ponds are apparently good for fishing. The connected trails provided by the Trustees are a bit over 3 miles of walking. It’s worth doing all of them, especially the trail to Conaumet Point,…
Out to Greenside this morning, warm, close and sometimes sunny. Butterflies: Green-veined Whites, several spotted woods, peacocks, small tortoiseshells & painted ladies on thistles. I rather like this odd view of a painted lady. few more photos on flickr. My Butterflies by month continues to grow.

Moonlit dawn. A screech owl quavers, prompting a barred owl to hoot. As light builds in the east, a whippoorwill begins to shriek.
