In 1885, Hermann Ebbinghaus, memorised a bunch of nonsense words, and mapped how much he forgot over time. He discovered what is now called the forgetting curve. This basically means you forget most of what you learnt within 24h, then if you don’t practice recall, your remaining memories decay exponentially. How fast the decay happens depends on the person and the memory, but in general the rate of decay slows down each time you actively recall it. This is not the same as re-reading the thing.…
From The Complete Guide to Fasting. We have a bunch of conditioned responses to triggers like a thought of watching a movie, or a football match. The sizzling of veggies (or steak) on the pan. Time of day, and so on. We have done this same thing so many times. Even though we are not hungry at night, we would still make some food or eat, lest we get hungry at night. Hunger is ok. It feels like the end of the world - but it is not. Hugh Howey talks about it in his routine as well. We often don’t…

The ways the author motivates themself read again, is by having a book-review newsletter to write by the end of each book. They are taking notes while they read, about any and every thing. I read this part with a little bit of scorn. I thought to myself, I don’t do this. I pick up books because I want to read them. I enjoy reading them. And I do. But also, I have a bookshelf page on my website, where I post reviews and track the books I read. I have a similar reason for reading the many posts I…

TOFI not Tofu (the food). Read first about it in The Diabetes Code BMI is not a good predictor of T2 diabetes. A waist circumference is a better indicator. Visceral fat accumulates inside and around the intra-abdominal organs - like kidney, liver, etc. In contrast subcutaneous fat is fat deposited under the skin. Waist to heigh ratio should be less than half. So, for me waist should be under 89cms or 35 inches.

At a time in the recent past, humanity did not know about extinction - everything seemed to exist in perpetuity. Then came Cuvier, a French naturalist who looked at fossils (which were assumed to belong to humans in some cases, and elephants in other) and said, they were in fact extinct. Our knowledge of the world seems to have grown in almost all the aspects in this similar fashion - the solar system, Newton’s law. While listening to his story in The Sixth Extinction, I came to know about his…
