The other day, my youngest brought a self-made journal home from school. Their teacher assigned the class the task of drawing some pages about how they imagine the future. Simon had just quickly scribbled a small window on the cover of his journal (he doesn’t seem very enthusiastic about this task, since he actually enjoys drawing and has become quite artistic), drew himself in, and then did what probably most kids do when they’re asked to do something that doesn’t intrinsically motivate them at all: putting it aside and ignoring it ever since. At least he still managed to come up with an artistic alias for himself as the author of the work. As I sat in front of his still-blank journal, I remembered that I was given a similar assignment back in my school days, when I was Simon’s age. Back then, however, we were allowed to freely choose our form of creative expression, which meant we could also build something. I decided to make a “future box.” It’s not in particularly good condition…
