The Voting Rights Act, which was passed in 1965 after centuries of terror and decades of organizing and the literal deaths of people who believed Black Americans deserved to participate in their own democracy, has been so thoroughly gutted that voting rights lawyers are essentially doing triage. A Netflix roast aired lynching jokes and George Floyd jokes to a laughing audience on one of the most watched platforms on earth. The comedian who made those jokes is the same man who six months ago stood at a Trump rally and called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage, and was then invited back, given a bigger room, a larger audience, and a Netflix budget.
