A little later this month, due to last week’s bank holiday, Tony and I met up this morning at Ebley for our regular riverfly count. I was somewhat hopeful the numbers might be good, following the successful morning last Sunday, but you never can tell with this site. The good news was the levels and flow were very low, so we could get to all the usual parts. I took the kick sample while Tony timed, and then he did the stone wash. On very first glance, the bucket didn’t look all that promising before we tipped into the sample tray. However, that all changed very quickly. There were loads of olives – something which I’ve seen only in small numbers at recent sites. Plus we also had a healthy number of stone clingers and blue-winged olives. So, overall the score was 9 which was very good for this site and matches what we found downstream at the weekend. It’s good to get this baseline now, as things could start to decline in June if this dry weather continues much longer.
