Have you ever wondered how people get pulled into cults? It's because they offer easy answers to problems1. You don't have to worry about how to live your life, some guru will tell you how to live it. For many it gives them the justification to hate people that make them feel uncomfortable instead of confronting their feelings. Do trans people make you feel uncomfortable, well many religious groups hate them and you can too if you join up. Then once you've started to buy in to the cult, you tie your identity to it2. Once your identity is tied to a belief moving past it to anything else is like giving up part of yourself, which is far harder than changing what you think. Giving up part of yourself involves loss of identity, diving into the hard unknown of life and figuring out who you are again. We spend decades figuring out who we are, it's terrifying to have to start again. Footnotes 1 How to Not Know Pg 16 2 How to Not Know Pg 19
