My latest piece at Cinema Sugar: Gone with the Wind and Sinners are Twin Visions of America. I rewatched Sinners earlier this year, and thinking about its 1930s Southern setting triggered a lightbulb moment about Gone with the Wind, perhaps the definitive (for better or worse) movie about the South that was released rather than set in the ’30s but brought a lot of the views of its time into its depiction of the antebellum South. That led me down a rabbit hole where I discovered more surprising connections between these two very different movies, both visual and thematic. (Seriously, all the visual symmetries are accidentally awesome.) This was a bullseye for my interests in film and American history, and it was a pleasure to piece together. Read and share it if you please!
