Photo by Tom Eckstrom In her later years, famous photographer Imogen Cunningham (1883-1976) adopted a uniform of sorts—a dark dress, dark stockings, a big cape and sensible shoes. But to add an element of whimsy, she included unusual hats. “We saw her striding around San Francisco,” wrote one admirer, “easily recognizable by the beaded cap atop a fringe of white bangs and the cape winging behind her” (After Ninety, 10). Imagine how easy it must have been to get dressed in the morning. Put on more or less the same clothes and then spend a little time choosing the right hat for the day. Where did she get them? I would give a lot to have seen her hat rack.
