Salon magazine has been publishing on the World Wide Web as long as I have. I started my digital career mere weeks before Salon spooled up and became an early success in the fledgling industry of web media. Slate would follow a few months later, and the two of them carried the web-native publishing flag for many years, through numerous owners and umpteen changes to how people consume information online. Slate persists—I listen to one of their podcasts routinely—as did Salon, until today. It was a remarkable run, as the editors put it in their farewell post. Many online publications have come and gone, particularly from the 1990s (Stim, anyone?), and these two have soldiered nobly onward. I have not been a regular Salon reader of late, but I will miss it just the same. I appreciated its longevity and its timeline parallel to my own. A round of applause for an honorable three-plus decades of hard work.
