Saw Wildwood last night in the theater with the fam. We all really liked it. To get this out of the way: I’m biased because I’m a Portlander, and this movie, made by Portland-based studio LAIKA, is heavy-handed with the Portland and Oregon references. That’s fun for us. 😁 That said, and trying to be objective, I still think it was a super cool movie and well worth anyone’s time. The plot was creative, the trajectory was good, the visuals were stunning. It’s a stop-motion film, and it’s mind-boggling to me the amount of artistry and labor that must have gone into it, combined with the creators’ ability to capture physicality and provoke emotion. They do use CGI in combination with the stop-motion. But still, in this era of AI-generated muck, I’m in awe of the handiwork behind this movie and so grateful for it. I feel like a phony calling it an “achievement,” but that’s the word that comes to mind. Check it out!
