Sopwith Salamander 0 ▲ Shouting Into The Void 1 hour ago · Art · hide These are 1:144 scale Sopwith Salamanders, a British armoured ground-attack aircraft from the very end of WW1, based largely on the Snipe. They were ordered in quantity in order to support the offensives intended for 1919, but the Armistice intervened, and in the end only two ever made it to the Western Front. It was used as a test-bed for a new (to the British) multi-colour disruptive paint scheme. As well as the camouflage, new low-visibility markings were trialled: the red and blue of the roundels were desaturated, and the white ring replaced with the same pale grey-green used on the fuselage sides. The white outer ring was done away with entirely, and the roundels were applied asymmetrically on the top wing surfaces. A normal RAF roundel was applied to the underside of the starboard lower wing. The undersides of the lower wings were painted black. No other national markings were applied anywhere on the aircraft.I've wanted to build and paint a Salamander ever since I saw it… Commenting on Bubbles has been removed. Why?
