Recently, John Gruber linked to a prior rant about how much he dislikes Apple Notes using a single-story lowercase a, despite liking Futura (which I also like). It doesn’t bother me, and though I’d like to try switching from San Francisco to New York, I may even like it. But a font detail I have developed an aversion to, is a lowercase g with an conspicuous “ear.” While it’s moslty a serif problem, as a typical sans-serif g looks like: There are exceptions. A serif g with an inconspicuous ear looks like: Conspicuous serif ears typically have ball terminals. Some like The New Yorker Caslon’s don’t look bad, the font’s just too fancy for most, but not all, writing. A lot of g ears are droopy like an ear, while others are more erect like an antenna: From Lora, a font common on Substack. But the worst I’ve seen is NPR’s: “I Luv the Valley OH!” by Xiu Xiu
