This show has managed to transcend its original premise and is growing into something even better. What’s the first season was a series of intellectually stimulating puzzles for our hero(acting as his brother under the guise of trying to find him)This second season develops the character in a realistic way. Acting without the authority of the law, merely being a consultant to it, it is clear that John is now finding the cases that must be puzzled out an annoyance and distraction from what has gradually become his real goal, finding his brother and unravelling the wider mystery. David Mitchell brings out the frustrations of his limited access and slow progress really well – he’s no longer the smug problem setter and crime solver, but he driven individual. Supporting cast round out the show and bring it further to life. It will be interesting to see where season 3 goes next.
