Where I draw the line

I use AI for my work, for which this blog is a hub. Using AI necessarily raises questions of authorship and attribution. Who did the writing, the author or his agent? Is this blog the work of a machine or of my mind? Of course the mind is never unmediated by technology. I hope my readers will not begrudge me the use of the codex and the text editor1 if I call the thoughts posted here my own. But still, having AI write is fundamentally different from using those other assistive technologies for writing, even though I don’t know how to articulate why it is different. So for myself at least, and perhaps for my readers, I find it necessary to draw the line where I will and won’t use AI in my work. For the purposes of this website, here is where I draw the line right now. Anything that bears my name, I take responsibility for. If there is an error in fact or judgment, I accept it as mine, just as I would for a work of scholarship aided by a research assistant. But in the same way, I also…
