Needing a solution for my old desktops 0 ▲ Rubenerd 1 day ago · Tech · hide · 0 comments I joked on Mastodon yesterday that my stack of vintage computer desktops proved too heavy to move when I needed to retrieve something that fell down behind them. I wasn’t kidding; this AT clone, SGI Indigo2, and XT clone have the combined weight of a collapsed star, give or take a few errant photons. This amounts to more than a mild inconvenience, for several reasons: I’ve lost more items behind this stack of wonderful, classic computing than I care to admit. Okay that’s not true, I would tell you, but I can’t, because I can’t move them to count. It’s made working on any one machine painful. I’d love to spend an idle Sunday afternoon getting a Hercules graphics card working on that AT, or seeing if I can coax a SCSI emulator to life using the SGI’s onboard controller, but it would involve moving all the machines above it away. Therefore unlikely to do so. My tower machines sit on the lab table, or in the display case out in the lounge. But that leaves these machines and their current… No comments yet.
