Ever since I started my new job in January of this year, I’ve been getting up at 0500 so I can start my day quietly and be ready for my first meeting at 0600 MST. It took a little while for me to get used to the new schedule, but I’m doing pretty well with it now. I allow myself a nap midday during lunch if I need it. One of the nearly magical things about this time of year and getting up this early, is going for a morning walk in the dark. I carry my small flashlight and make sure I’m not stomping on or being approach by any critters along the way, but the flashlight is not kept on continuously. There’s enough ambient lights from the moon or the lights of Tucson to make out what’s around me once my eyes adjust a bit. I have always enjoyed quiet moments in the dark. As a kid, my favorite rides in the car took place at night. I do some of my best writing and thinking when I’m sitting alone in the dark. I find a magical peace in the moment. And that’s a great way to start the day.
