Penny, the juvenile pigeon, came to us last week after being found in the city centre sitting on a windowsill all day, making no attempt to fly away when approached. At first, she wasn’t eating independently and I had to force-feed her by putting some defrosted peas in her mouth – she didn’t like this much and was definitely old enough to be feeding herself. So I gave her an iPad and played a pigeon loft YouTube video showing pigeons pecking at seeds. This did the trick! She immediately tried to copy the pigeons on the iPad. It took her a few tries but eventually she got the knack and now she’s eating really well on her own. I’ll keep her until the end of the week then let her go near where she was found but with a flock of pigeons who can hopefully teach her some street smarts! I have also seen Matilda several times in town now. I do feel sorry for her with only one foot but it’s probably more comfortable than the enormously swollen foot she had previously.
