The Odyssey

Book review for The Odyssey by Homer. I rated it 5 stars. In anticipation of the release of the new Christopher Nolan movie, I decided to give The Odyssey a read. Even if you’ve never read the poem, it’s one of those stories that a lot of people are roughly familiar with just through pop culture references or from school. And I specifically say “a lot” and not “everyone” because I was surprised to meet at least two people recently who had never heard of it (I suppose it depends on your age, or maybe where you grew up?) In short, Odysseus (sometimes translated as Ulysses) goes off to spend 10 years fighting in the Trojan War - chronicled in another poem The Iliad - and then The Odyssey covers his 10-year journey to get back home. The stories were first passed down orally, before possibly being written down during the 8th century BC by a Greek man named Homer - although scholars debate whether he even existed as a person at all.
