This is the seventh post in my A-Z Toolbox series, in which I’m listing tools I use down the alphabet for no logical or practical reason. Beans. The letter G naturally conjures the wider GNU cinematic universe, though I’ll admit I use only a small selection of their tooling thesedays. I’d be tempted to mess with GNUStep, though. My surprising winner for G is Go. It’s oddly the first programming language since Perl (and Java, admittedly) that “clicks” the way my weird brain works. I’ve tried Python and Rust, but they’ve felt like a struggle. Ruby almost got me, but not like Go. I’ve written so many little tools in Go, even ones I might have reached for Perl to do before. At some point I’ll clean them up and share for wider critique, but not today. Tools gifsicle. Toolkit for creating static and animated GIFs. git. I’m not much of a fan, but it’s the way the crumble cookied. got. The Game of Trees, from the OpenBSD folks. A better git. GraphicsMagick. Indispensable graphic processing…
