As we go into our Club weeks, I always have a pile of possibles drawn from the TBR which I hope to choose from for my reading. However, despite having many, many options, I realised when looking through online lists of books published in 1949 that there was a title by a particular favourite of mine which I didn’t actually own… The ones of his which are missing from my collection can often be quite expensive, so I had a nervous browse online, and to my delight I was able to find a reasonably priced first edition in really nice condition. The book in question is one of his autobiographies, “All I Could Never Be” and the author is of course the marvellous Beverley Nichols! Nichols is best known nowadays for his house/garden books, and he’s made many appearances on the Ramblings. He was incredibly prolific and something of a prodigy, writing his first autobiography, appropriately titled “Twenty Five”, at that age, and it was first published in 1926. I’ve read and loved a later collection…
