The Secret Commonwealth – Philip Pullman Twenty years have passed since we left La Belle Sauvage, and the world is changing as the Magisterium exerts more control, the agents of The Authority becoming more authoritarian. After discovering a murdered botanist and a rucksack containing an intriguing notebook, book of addresses and seeds, and Lyra and Pan’s relationship falls apart, Lyra, Pantalaimon and Malcolm each journey east through Central Europe and into Asia in search of different things – Pan seeks Lyra’s imagination; for Lyra it’s Pan and the mysterious “Blue Hotel” in the desert of Karamakan mentioned in the notebook; and for Malcolm it’s Lyra, who he’s in love with (a bit ick, that). En route they encounter more people who can separate from their daemons, and even daemon-less people, refugees fleeing from the “men from the mountains” who are destroying rose farms…..
