This year I’ve been doing adult ed classes on archaeology, after a lifetime’s fascination with old stuff: wanting to be a palaeontologist at the age of nine (like so many other nine-year-olds); studying Late British History at sixteen; wanting to take first-year history at uni, but missing out because it clashed with first-year maths; and soaking in the sights of Britain, to say nothing of the rest of the world, for half my life. The last few years of revisiting the Scottish highlands and islands have rekindled my love of its prehistoric sites in particular. What with being on my own for half of each week, and looking for work, I’ve had an opening for a weekly class even if in the middle of the day, which is when Edinburgh Council’s archaeology classes run. So I signed up for a short block from the end of April to the start of June, and started another longer one at the end of September. I’m hoping I’ll have to cut this term short to start a new job, but even half a term’s classes…
