October 5, 2026 - our first “real” cold front of the season! This is my favorite time of year, this period between summer and fall. The humidity has departed. The days are warm, the nights are cool, and the light of the rising sun feels like a hug rather than an oppressor. Migration is still a trickle, but surprises are possible every day! This captures early fall in Kansas City perfectly in my mind - crows and leaves that only show their yellow in the light of the rising sun. Now, if you’ve been here long, you realize I have a lot of favorites. I’m still hoping to see shorebirds, especially avocets, pay a visit on their way south. I’m hoping for large flocks of Franklin’s gulls, ducks of all colors, and all the other amazing birds that can travel through here in fall migration. One of this week’s surprises: a turkey that somehow didn’t see me and ran away immediately!I’m looking forward to the sunsets, which seem to get better as we move into late fall and winter. I always hope it’s cold…
