I hope you’re all as excited as I am about our upcoming week of club reading which this time is from 1949! When I first started looking for titles I soon realised it was a bumper year and the hardest thing for me has been deciding what to read. I’m very much looking forward to hearing about all of the books people have been reading, though I do suspect it will be bad for the wish list and TBR!! Anyway, I thought I would take a quick look back at some previous reads from 1949, and my goodness, there are quite a lot of them!! Pre-blog, I read some of the substantial books from the year; “The Second Sex” by Simone de Beauvoir, for example, which I first came across in my twenties. Although I suspect it may be showing its age in some respects, it was an inspirational book for me. However, I was in my teens when I discovered George Orwell! I was lucky enough to attend a brilliant school where we read and studied his books, and so “Animal Farm”, “Down and Out in Paris and London” and…
