It’s foundational rock music – groovy and flamboyant, sexy but silly, tapped into cultural roots but unapologetically artificial. There’s a lot of glam pastiche, but I think what Spike Fuck is doing here is a lot more sincere and heartfelt than straightforward genre emulation. They’re tapping into a tradition in the hope of finding something distinct about themselves within it. To unlock something, to see themselves from another angle. And while the song is explicitly about getting clean, the emotional center is about learning to see themselves a new way.
