Arizona is a unique place. In two hours you can traverse from the Sonoran Desert to the Mogollon Rim. A trip that will take you from forests of Saguaro cactus to forests of Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir. And, drop the mercury in the thermometer by about 25 degrees. This weekend, I escaped the Valley of the Sun (with a couple of friends) for a bit of camping in the cooler hinterlands of the state. It felt like fall. Sweatshirt weather. If you live in the desert, you learn to appreciate opportunities to layer your clothing. This trip gave me the opportunity to cool off, enjoy the solitude of the forest, take a few photos, and complete a sketch. Campsite at sunrise East Clear Creek, looking a little turbid due to recent rains A peculiar looking fungus among us Forest views for miles A sketch -- pencil, pen, and water color -- of our campground If you appreciated this post, you might enjoy fear of the empty page, revisiting the fear of the empty page, and sonoran desert in black and white
