Music Monday: Some Old, Some New, Some Timeless 0 ▲ Archaeology of the Mediterranean World 1 hour ago · Music · hide · 0 comments While I’m writing this, I’m enjoying Cannonball Adderley’s Fiddler on the Roof (1964) which matches Adderley’s alto with Charles Lloyd’s tenor saxophone. Lloyd is in fine form and his solos on sex and flute and Nat Adderley’s on sometimes muted cornet really stand out. Joe Zawinul joins them on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. This won’t rock your world or make you hear in color, but it’s pretty great. I like JD Allen albums and I particularly love his two albums called Americana from 2016 and 2022. Whenever he drops a new album I give it a listen. On Friday, he released Söwt (2026). To spare you my ham-fisted attempt to describe the Moroccan tinged music that this album celebrates, I’ll direct you to this lengthy review of Söwt and Allen’s place in the jazz universe right now. Or you can just check the album out and judge for yourself. Finally, I continue to root around in John Coltrane’s discography that is both boundless and so very limited.
