What song makes you feel like you’re in a different country? The first time I went abroad I was 15, a three week camping holiday in France. My main packing priority was my Walkman and a good selection of tapes (cassettes) I was still mostly in my parents musical realm but was delighted to have borrowed two tapes from the library to take with me. So, alongside Soull II Soul, Bomb the Bass, and Queen, I had an old album from Dire Straits, Love Over Gold. Thinking back, and checking the timelines, I’ve no idea why I thought enough of Dire Straits at that time. Their smash hit Money for Nothing was a couple of years in the past but, it seems, I was deep diving on their back catalogue. Something I’ve continued to do throughout my life, not quite a fixation, just an enjoyment of finding album tracks from artists I already like.
