Finsbury Park is a neighbourhood in north London which straddles the boundaries of three London boroughs; Haringey, Hackney and Islington. It is noted for its diverse mix of cultures and has a total population of around 18,000 people. You would imagine that Finsbury Park would be in Finsbury, but the latter actually lies three miles to the south adjacent to Moorgate and Clerkenwell in the City of London, so is a completely separate area. However, the two areas are linked. The expansion of Victorian London and the urbanisation of its then-outer areas meant that the natural green spaces in the areas in and around Finsbury had been lost. In 1841, the residents of Finsbury started a petition to demand a permanent public park be created to provide a recreational space for residents.Four potential locations for the new park were identified and a site in Hornsey Wood (three miles north of Finsbury) was eventually selected as London's next great park.
