Iceberg 0 ▲ Richard’s Blog 1 hour ago · Nature · hide · 0 comments Recommended: A23a: Biography of an iceberg, The Documentary Podcast, BBC World Service, 3 September 2026.It’s a 28 minutes documentary including iceberg sounds, and hearing the awe of people as they meet an iceberg “twice the size of London”.* * *After listening, I wondered about the naming convention used. Wikipedia tells me it’s The US National Ice Center who names and tracks icebergs. The first letter indicates the position where the iceberg was first spotted (A is 0–90 degrees west, Weddell Sea). The number is sequential (23rd “A” iceberg). A letter suffix means the iceberg calved from an already named iceberg: “A23 split into several pieces, the largest of which was christened A23a”. But best of all, while ferreting around, I read that iceberg size classifications for some regions include “Growler” and “Bergy bit”. Both below “small”. No comments yet.
